How do we compare with the competition?
Sure, you can always use Google(TM) "Adsense for Search" to offer readers some ability to search your archive. But then they usually don't index all pages from all websites since they tend to optimize their resources to index the most popular pages first and taking a lot longer to index pages from smaller sites if these get indexed at all (depending on how optimized your site is for their search engine).
In other words, there is no way you can be assured that you will be able to search your entire historic archive using Adsense for search, unless you use their "Custom Search Business Edition" which, however, is not free.
